Robotic welding of steel structures for precast concrete transport

At Blue Workx, we use robotic welding to manufacture steel structures for transporting and storing precast concrete, including inloader pallets, storage racks and A-frames. Our programmers define the welding paths and settings, while our operators monitor the process and inspect the welds. The rail-mounted 6-axis welding robot performs the programmed movements accurately and repeatably. This combines our skilled team’s expertise with automation to achieve consistent weld quality.

in robotic welding

Robotic welding has been an established part of the Blue Workx workshop for many years. We work with Rolan Robotics in this area. Our OTC robotic welding installation is over 26.5 metres long and features a robot that travels along rails. The setup can be adapted to different steel structures for transporting and storing precast concrete. We use the installation for our own products, custom fabrication and repeat customer orders. This flexibility helps us weld a variety of products and manage peaks in production.

The welder determines

The welder determines
how the robot welds

Good robotic welding starts with the knowledge of our skilled team. Our programmer defines the welding path, travel speed and welding torch orientation in the welding program. Our operator sets up the installation and checks that the workpiece is correctly clamped. A different assembly may require different settings and welding positions. The robot then repeats the programmed movements while the operator monitors the process and inspects the welds. Where necessary, the programmer adjusts the welding program. In this way, the robot supports our skilled team, whose knowledge and experience remain essential in every production cycle.

Repeatable welding for everyday precast operations
everyday precast operations

Inloader pallets, storage racks and A-frames need to meet the requirements of loading, transporting and storing precast concrete elements. Blue Workx develops steel solutions for these everyday tasks. Our standard inloader pallet, for example, has an S355 steel frame and is designed to transport precast concrete wall panels upright. In this working environment, a controlled production process matters. Robotic welding helps limit variation in repeated welding movements. By carefully matching the settings to the product, we establish a basis for consistent weld quality and reduce the likelihood of rework.

Flexible configuration

Suitable for different products. The setup can be adapted to other jobs, allowing a wider range of products to be welded by the robot.

A different product calls for a different approach

Custom fabrication involves variations in dimensions, joints and access to weld seams. Each job therefore requires suitable workholding and a welding program tailored to the task. The Blue Workx robotic welding installation can be reconfigured for different products. This allows us to use robotic welding for a wide range of orders while addressing the requirements of each steel structure.
